The Art of the Staycation: St Andrews

Well, you might not have the Union, The Rule or the chance to socialise in-person… but need not despair. Here is my checklist of Covid-safe spots in St Andrews – must-see sites that have been hiding under your nose! 

1.     St Mary’s Quad

In case you missed it, the grass at St Mary’s Quad is now adorned with little socially-distanced heart bubbles. It’s certainly a cute spin on social distancing, allowing you to get fresh air next to the thorn tree planted by Mary, Queen of Scots. Whether you’re seeking a study space or some sunbathing, St Mary’s Quad hearts have you covered!

2.     A Cathedral Walk

Despite being one of St Andrews’ most popular attractions, surprisingly few of us have ventured here after Fresher’s Raisin. But when you’re in the sunshine and (optionally) sober, the arches which saw archbishops and the tower whose reputation towers above, are definitely worth seeing!

3.     Walk the Old Course

As the Old Course is closed to play on almost every Sunday, it’s the perfect walk on a Sunday evening! Now’s your chance to stand on Swilcan bridge and see the gorgeous view of St Andrews from a whole different angle – the scenic place where golf was born.

4.     Pier walk

You might not exactly fancy donning your red gown on a solitary stroll, but that’s no reason to miss out on walking the pier. The lower part of the pier is a perfect place for a picturesque picnic, whilst the higher, narrower part may be reserved for the bravest students. Let’s just hope it’s the view (not the wind) which will blow you away!

5.     West Sands

A trip to West Sands just had to be on the list! With almost 2 miles of uninterrupted sandy beach, you can live the Hedonist lifestyle of the 4 S’s: Sun, sand, sea and… St Andrews. If you fancy something a little different, why not go at sunrise for an early morning swim? Or similarly, it could be a great spot to watch the sunset. (Running as though you’re in Chariots of Fire optional, but recommended.)

6.     Botanic gardens

Although some areas are currently closed to the public, we can visit the gardens resting assured that we are being Covid-safe. A variety of plants and biomes are on display, with trees shadowing overhead and shrubs peeking out underfoot. With 18 acres filled to the brim with bursting gorgeous colours, this is a perfect way to spend your day.

7.     Castle Sands

Though the Castle itself is currently closed, Castle Sands is very much ready for action! Located under the cliff of the castle, this cosy beach promotes a lovely atmosphere to dip your toe in the water, have a sea-side picnic or sunbathe (though, in Fife, that sunbathing is usually done with a hoodie, a coat and a blanket for good measure!). I’m sure the medieval archbishops of the castle took an occasional break to the sea-fresh air of the beach to clear their heads – and you can too!

8.     The Lades Braes walk

For the more active among you, Covid restrictions on Sports may be taking their toll. Never fear, we have the perfect alternative. The Lades Braes public footpath is a beautiful walkway. Whether you’re in the mood for open hillsides, woodland, or wildflowers, Lade Braes has something for everyone.

9.     St Andrews Harbour

Just a few steps from St Andrews’ main streets lies the harbour. Nestling beneath the town’s buildings and ruins, the little harbour boasts around a dozen fishing vessels and the colourful houses provide the perfect backdrop, making this quaint spot a sight to see even in the drizzliest rain.

10.     Blackfriars Chapel, Hamish McHamish, George Whyte-Melville Fountain, Gregory’s Meridian Line…

Lastly, what about these places that you pass every day? St Andrews is full of hidden histories. Why not look up their stories and see?

 You don’t have to spend voluntary lockdown cooped up – it’s time to go explore (though only with your household!)
