Submission Guidelines
At ST.ART, we select the most relevant, well-crafted work to produce St Andrews' premier resource for contemporary art and culture. There is no limit to the number of submissions per person. However, please be aware that we have a limited number of pages available in any given issue and are often overwhelmed with submissions, so we cannot publish all work. Our guidelines serve as a starting point to provide further insight into our creative mission. ST.ART will not attempt to limit your imagination; rather, as part of our mission, we actively emphasise freedom of artistic expression and creativity, and we encourage submissions from all those interested including both beginning and more established writers.
Title: All submitted pieces must include a title. You may also include a subheading if applicable.
Name: All submitted pieces must include the name of the author.
Theme: We advise that authors avoid inappropriate, offensive or otherwise objectionable language and subject matter. Any forms of hate-speech and discriminatory language will not be tolerated. Profanity is strongly discouraged. If controversial topics are spoken of, we hope that they are entirely relevant and that the writer is learned on the subject. Please also ensure that your theme is specific to the task.
Credit: If you have explicitly used someone else’s words, they should be credited in the article. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
Proofreading: Please ensure that you have thoroughly proofread your work before submitting it. This includes fact-checking in addition to correcting spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. Rough first drafts should not be the final version of your piece.
Word count: While we do not strictly enforce a specific word count, we do ask for a minimum of 300 words on all submitted work. Please be advised that the word count will vary depending on the nature of the piece and the section of the magazine. For example, a poem written for our Creative Writing section may not have a minimum or maximum word count at all.
Images: Authors should attach several images from which the sub-editor will select the final few. We ask for a minimum of two photographs to accompany all articles. Please aim for a balance between text and images. Wherever necessary, please state what order you would like the images to appear by either including this information in your original email or embedding a note within the text. Ideally, we would like the pictures to be of the highest quality possible. Pictures must also be accompanied with credit captions which include where the picture was originally found. Typically, the credit captions include the name of the photographer and the website from which the image or video was sourced. Depending on the article, the caption may be more complex - this is the case for film stills. If there is any confusion, feel free to consult an editor or refer to a similar article on our website.
Interviews: If you have interviewed a person for an article, please record the interview and credit the person where necessary.
