Hygge: The Danish Secret to Happier, Cozier Winters

By: Isabella Angeles

If you’ve ever found yourself wandering through the streets of Copenhagen on a cold winter evening, you’ve likely encountered hygge– which can be briefly defined as a cosiness of the soul. But more tangibly, hygge is a Danish and Norwegian term that describes a warm, comforting atmosphere where people can enjoy life’s simple pleasures with their loved ones. Hygge is more than the soft lighting from candles and the warmth from knitted blankets; it reflects Danish cultural values and might explain why Danes are some of the happiest people in the world.

At its core, hygge is about slowing down and savouring the moment. While dim lighting, crackling fireplaces, and warm cups of tea set the mood, hygge is ultimately a mindset– it’s a commitment to seeking joy in life’s simple pleasures. In Denmark, it shapes daily life, everything from social interactions to home design. It creates a sense of togetherness and becomes more prominent during the winter, offering warmth and comfort to counter the harsh cold darkness of Scandinavian winters. Hygge reminds us that happiness often comes from the smallest moments:  a quiet evening with a good book, a shared meal with friends by candlelight, or late-night baking followed by a cosy winter movie.

On my recent trip to Copenhagen, I discovered hygge and though the temperature dropped well below 0 degrees, I still found warmth in small, meaningful moments– something I believe we can embrace in St. Andrews as well.  I learned that hygge isn’t just for the Danes. Anyone, anywhere can bring a little more cosiness and contentment into their lives. Here’s how:

Create a Cozy Space: Surround yourself with comfort by adding warm lighting, soft textures, and personalised touches that make you feel at ease. Think of candlesticks, fairy lights, projector screens, and framed pictures of happy memories.

Savour Simple Moments: Find joy in everyday rituals. Enjoy the process of making tea or coffee– waiting for the kettle to boil, adding your favourite touch of sugar, cream, or syrup. Sit on the couch and watch the rain from your window. Or wrap yourself in a thick sweater or soft blanket on a chilly day.

Prioritise Meaningful Connection: Invite friends and loved ones over for a relaxed cooking night, potluck, or takeaway feast. Keep the conversation light, put on a playlist with your favourite music, and enjoy each other’s company.

Indulge in Quiet Moments: Give yourself permission to rest and recharge. Curl up with a book, journal by candlelight, or try a new hobby like crochet, watercolour, or baking. Bundle up and take a walk by the sea. Sit in silence and enjoy a warm drink, and embrace the beauty of life’s simple pleasures.

In a world where things often feel rushed and overwhelming, hygge is a gentle reminder to slow down, be present, and find beauty in the ordinary. The Danes have mastered this way of living and make harsh winters something to look forward to. Maybe it’s time we all embrace a little more hygge in our lives.
