Closet Confidential: Bella Coxon
Street Style Icon and Bohemian Babe
Article by: Soph Hill
For Bella Coxon, fashion and style have been passed down from generation to generation. Her mother used to design for the gorgeous British brand, Ghost in the nineties, helping create the sleek and stylish reputation it holds today. Her sister continues this legacy by designing and crafting shoes.
Born in London but currently living in Brighton, Bella’s taste has developed into an electric, ethereal and enchanting masterpiece as she takes inspiration from the street style chicness around her. Some would say it’s practically in her DNA to be a fashion tour de force. But Bella isn’t interested in pursuing a career in fashion like the ones who came before her, and instead focuses on curating a personal style that allows her to celebrate all the different parts of herself. She welcomed me into her boho inspired room to talk about her evolving style, body positivity, and the importance of a good turtleneck.
Bella had one of the most amazing closets I had ever seen. Her items really encompassed a wide spectrum of styles: from glamorous and posh, to delicate and cozy. Bella explained to me that instead of following the trends presented in magazines and glitzy shop windows, she dressed for her mood. Bella expressed her undying love of turtlenecks (I mean, who doesn’t love a comfy turtleneck?) and how it invokes a kind of sleekness without being too forward. As we dissected her closet further, she shared with me an unbelievably cool Japanese fireman’s jacket, made of the most incredible material and decorated in Japanese calligraphy. She described the magical experience of the piece as it beckoned to her and the feeling of knowing it belonged to her before she even bought it. This piece exemplifies Bella’s undying dedication to staying true to her own sense of identity. Another fashion staple for Bella is her gorgeous collection of rings, gathered thoughtfully on her fingers.
Bella’s dedication to finding true authenticity, and rising above the nasty insecurities women can fall victim to, is truly inspiring. It’s so easy to be influenced by the need to look, act, and be somebody else. Instead of focusing on embracing who you truly are, you can be hypnotized by the toxic need to criticize every flaw you think you have. When she needs inspiration to feel like her true inner goddess, she looks at the groundbreaking blog StyleLikeU, a site dedicated to empowering women to celebrate all kinds of beauty. Her influences also include the incredible wave of stunning plus-sized models who are dominating the industry right now. Bella cites Ashley Graham as her ultimate girl crush.
To put it in her own words, Bella’s style can be described as feminine and effortless. She dresses to please only herself. By focusing on getting to know herself, her style, in turn, has become seemingly irreplaceable. Bella is an excellent reminder that fashion is ephemeral and fleeting, but true style is the greatest tool we have to represent ourselves in the truest form. With grace and confidence, Bella will continue to dress in a way that means so much more than pretentious vanity. And most importantly, she embodies what it means to have incredibly high self-worth, which is something that will truly never go out of style.
