Mubarak’s Five February Favourites

by Mubarak Ali

1. Beyonce, Ed Sheeran and Gary Clark Jr, an admittedly motley crew of talent, combined to honour Stevie Wonder with this set. Soul, rock, reggae and blues- all the bases are covered with this jam. Gary Clark Jr melts your face off with the guitar, Ed Sheeran be jammin’ and Beyonce is Beyonce innit.

2. The Obama’s kinda know how to party, evidenced by their booking of Leon Bridges to perform Ray Charles’ classic ‘Lonely Avenue’. Bridges slays some serious shit with this cover and the sax solo ain’t half too bad.  Come for the blues tunes, stay for the golden jacket.

3. John Mayer and Keith Urban put on a guitar masterclass covering the Beatles’ ‘don’t let me down’. There’s a few sweet licks, a solo apiece and good times all around. Old John Mayer fans become new Keith Urban fans and vice versa.

4. Now I may be late to the party but what a party it was. The French anthem for the 2018 World cup ‘ramenez la coupe a la maison’ was produced and sung by French rapper Vegedream. This live version from the Stade de France makes you feel French patriotism previously unimagined.

5. Sting & Shaggy, yes you heard me right, hit the Tiny desk last year. Putting a reggae twist on hits like ‘Englishman in New York’ and ‘don’t make me wait’, the two best symbolise the eclectic nature of the musical choices in this article. This is truly the cross-over we did not realise we needed. There’s a whole album titled ‘44/876’ if this set didn’t satiate your musical taste buds.
