Eve Kreshtool: On Film
By Eve Kreshtool
Last summer, I was clearing out my bedside table when I found an old roll of film. I eagerly developed my mysterious negatives, performing each step carefully so as not to ruin the film. As I removed the roll from the tank and unraveled it from the reel, I excitedly discovered images from a trip I went on two years earlier. As I inspected each exposure, lost memories flooded back to me.
Working with a camera is tricky and can be frustrating. When images do not turn out properly because the light meter is broken or the film snags and breaks, it is easy to understand why smartphones and digital cameras have nearly replaced this archaic art. But when I think back to my discovery of the canister of film, I remember my excitement and anticipation to see these mysterious photos. When using film, the path to the photo is full of intricate steps and possible disasters, but the journey to the end product can be gratifying and precious.
