As I’m sure we’re all well aware, St Andrews is far too small. Yes, of course, it’s not a town where there are a handful of people, but it can be quite exhausting without the amenities of a large city (McDonalds, I’m looking at you). Moreover, as someone who’s spent most of their life in cities, I find that I miss both the hustle and bustle, as well as the feeling of anonymity that you’re able to get being in a big city. To me, cities bring me a certain jouissance because of the variety of photographic subjects that they provide. Some of my favourite photos I’ve ever taken are of people doing things in cities as they go about their daily life. I’ll never know these people, but I can still try to capture them existing and living in their world.

As such, when I went to Barcelona the weekend before term started, I feel as though I was able to get a breath of fresh Mediterranean air which blanketed me with warmth (which was a welcome escape from -3 Scotland), as well as a chance to capture some new moments of life. As a photographer, some of my favourite advice that I’ve been given (or, well, read), is that you want to try to capture things that people see every day and would miss if it wasn’t for you.
